IB Mathematics (Rm B-1)

Welcome to IB Mathematics (SL & HL) class for the 2023-24 school year!

I look forward to working with you to discover and cultivate your / your child's critical thinking abilities, capacity for original thought, and communication skills.

SETTING UP OUR GOOGLE CLASSROOM
We will use Google Classroom (GC) as the primary mode of sharing resources and collecting practice work for our learning community. Practice assignments, task instructions, and important announcements will be posted on this platform. It is free for both students and parents/guardians to sign up.

STUDENTS
All students are automatically enrolled through their school email address in our GC. It is the responsibility of the student to regularly check the page for updates, resources, & announcements.
PARENTS/GUARDIANS
If you would like to receive progress updates, please send an email to [email protected] with the following:
a) your name
b) your child's name
c) the email address you would like to receive GC updates with
We'll then send you an invite to join our GC.

IB Math SL stands for Standard Level, whereas IB Math HL stands for Higher Level. The SL and HL courses share the same five (5) key topics of Numbers & Algebra, Statistics & Probability, Functions, Geometry & Trigonometry, and Calculus. IB Math HL simply includes additional concepts and lessons beyond the scope of the SL course.

For this reason, we will move through the combined SL/HL course by studying each of the five topics. We will study the shared concepts together, and where the paths diverge, SL students will engage in review and extension activities while additional instruction is given to HL students when appropriate.

We use the Oxford IB Mathematics Higher Level textbook for both classes since it is all-inclusive of necessary information and activities for both the Standard and Higher Level courses.

Knowledge is valuable. However, it is imperative to question: Who is creating that knowledge?, Why is it worthy of study?, Can I create knowledge too? In traditional math classrooms, information is accepted without being questioned, but we aim to flip that script by transforming ourselves into authors of knowledge and taking ownership of our thinking. By incorporating theory of knowledge practices and relevant technology into our mathematical study, we draw upon intuition and reasoning, investigate structures, and formulate original solutions based on mathematical evidence. Furthermore, we will focus on academic writing in preparation for the Mathematical Exploration, the culminating product of students’ investigation of an interesting math topic.

  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others (SMP 3).
  • Identify and utilize resources intentionally to facilitate deeper learning and success.
  • Reason spatially and utilize logic to formulate arguments grounded in mathematical evidence.
  • Analyze scenarios involving key math fields to devise valid, original solutions.
  • Recognize and describe individual contributions to the learning space, including participation.
