Q: Can they check the time on their phone?
No. There is a clearly visible clock in the classroom, so students do not need to use their phones to check the time. Phones should remain silenced, put away, and out of sight throughout the class period.
Q: What if my student needs their phone for translation?
Students are welcome to use their Chromebook for translation needs. Chromebooks provide access to reliable tools such as Google Translate and meet this need without requiring a phone. When possible, I will also provide translated materials to support student access and understanding.
Q: What if my student needs their phone for an assignment?
If a phone is genuinely required for a specific class activity, students should speak with me ahead of time. Permission may be granted on a case-by-case basis if the task cannot reasonably be completed using a Chromebook.
Q: What if my student finishes their work early?
Students who finish early should work on assignments for other classes. Once all academic work is complete, they may use their Chromebook for appropriate school-related activities. Phone use is still not permitted.
Q: What if their Chromebook isn’t charged?
Coming to class with an uncharged Chromebook is considered being unprepared. Students may charge their device at the classroom charging station. If they need to borrow one of my chargers, they must temporarily leave their phone with me as collateral. Their phone will be returned as soon as the charger is returned.
Q: What if their Chromebook is broken?
Students should visit the library to check out a loaner Chromebook. If loaner devices are unavailable, they may ask to share with a classmate for that class period.
Q: Can students charge their phones in class? Can they keep it on their desk?
No. Phones should be charged at home or outside of class time. Phones may not be charged in class or kept on desks, as they create unnecessary distractions. If a phone is visible at any time, it will be confiscated in accordance with the classroom phone policy.
Q: Where are phones kept once confiscated?
Confiscated phones are stored in a locked drawer to ensure security.
Q: What if they need their phone for another class?
If it is a student's first offense, the phone will be returned at the end of the class period. For second offense, the phone will be held until lunch or the end of the school day, depending on the student's class period. By that point, students are expected to understand and follow the classroom expectations.
Q: What if I need to contact my student during class?
Please contact the school office. If there is an emergency, the office will ensure your student receives the message promptly.
Q: What if my student has a medical accommodation requiring a phone?
Students with a documented accommodation or health plan that requires access to a phone will be supported in accordance with their approved accommodations.
