Calculators

What classes can students use graphing calculators?

As students progress into higher levels of mathematics, graphing calculators offer a visual perspective to advanced problem solving. Students first learn the concepts without the aide of a graphing calculator; thus preparing for the state standardized assessments. For those students planning to take IB classes, AP Calculus or AP Statistics classes, or Precalculus, a graphing calculator is required. The Rowland High School math department recommends that students purchase their own TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus, graphing calculator for use throughout their mathematics career. These calculators have features that students can use well into college-level calculus, statistics and physics. If you have any questions about graphing calculators or mathematics at Rowland High School, please contact your student's math teacher.

Also available for students enrolled in Precalculus and above, graphing calculators can be checked out through their math teacher. Certain conditions need to be satisfied before a graphing calculator will be issued. Contact your student's math teacher for information.

Can calculators be used on standardized assessments?

No. Calculators can not be used on the California High School Exit Exam or the STAR assessments. Portions of the AP Calculus and AP Statistics Exams do not allow graphing calculators. However, portions of the IB Exams, AP Calculus and AP Statistics Exams require a graphing calculator. In addition, Golden State Exams (GSE) allow graphing calculators.
