This is the third course in Rowland High School's English honors series, and it builds on the skills taught in the two prior classes. Language A: Literature is a two-year, International Baccalaureate English class that emphasizes critical reading and interpretive writing. Students will also be required to plan and deliver formal and informal oral presentations. Works of core literature include: Ethan Frome, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Miss Julie, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Sound of Waves, The House of the Spirits, and the poetry of Pablo Neruda. Additional works of shorter length are also studied.

I use Turnitin.com for some essays completed at home. The first letter in the enrollment key is capitalized.

Class ID: 21871250
Enrollment key: Frome

Note: I recommend that students earn a grade of "C" (75%) or higher in English 10 Honors prior to enrolling in this class. Students who do not meet this recommended prerequisite may struggle with the expectations of this course.

Past Assignments

Due:

Assignment

Read the first four chapters in the novel (1-141). Then, respond to the critical reading questions posted on Google Classroom. Upload your answers to Google Classroom by Friday, 4/24.
Created by Matthew Falk: Monday, April 13 11:58 AM

Due:

Assignment

HL Essay drafts have been read and scored. Please check Turnitin.com for personalized feedback.

Here are some common issues:
  • The title of the uploaded document should be just your last name
  • Your name should not appear on the paper
  • An accurate word count should appear at the end of your paper
  • Many of you need to work on smoothly integrating and properly punctuating quotes within your body paragraphs
  • Some papers were very rough in terms of language and will require significant revision before resubmission
Please review my feedback on Turnitin.com and then revise your draft. Once finished, upload the revised version to Turnitin.com by Friday, 4/10. I will not be reviewing your revised drafts, but they will be sent to Mr. Boyd, and he will provide you with an opportunity to continue working on the HL Essay during senior year.

If you have any questions, please send an email.

Due:

Assignment

By Friday, 4/10, read poems #12-14 (attached) and answer the accompanying questions (attached) in a single document. Then, upload the document to Turnitin.com.
Created by Matthew Falk: Monday, April 6 10:26 AM

Due:

Assignment

On Wednesday, 4/8, the prompt and poem for Essay #3 will appear on Google Classroom. You will have from 8:30-10:00 AM to write the essay and upload it to Turnitin.com.

Here is a preview of the directions:

Prompt: Write a literary commentary in regard to the following Neruda poem.

Directions: You will have 90 minutes (from 8:30-10:00) to read the poem, write an essay, and upload it to Turnitin.com. Although you will be writing from home, it is my expectation that the essay you produce will be solely your own work. In addition, you should keep in mind that commentary writing involves you arguing your own interpretation of the passage. In other words, it is up to you to decide upon the literary features you plan to analyze and the theme you choose to explore. Remember that a generic thesis for a paper of this nature may look something like this: “In the poem, Neruda utilizes __________ and __________ in order to __________.”
Created by Matthew Falk: Monday, April 6 11:24 AM
