Grammar provides the rules for grammar. Grammar is a map for better communication and expression.  The 8 parts of speech are included in grammar.

We use grammar for listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Today's lesson - Adverbs- An adverb describes an action. In the word adverb

Ad- represents the adjective and verb the action. This will help you to remember the function of the adverb.  Examples:

He ran quickly.

She sang beautifully       red=verb       blue= adverb

Do your work carefully.

Reading Aloud- Run Away- pgs 300- 301- vocabulary used- danger, hypothalamus, circulatory system, adrenal glands, blood vessels, blood pressure, supercharged, escape.

Read Aloud- Stand Your Ground!- pgs. 304-305 On lined paper write out the question and the answer for numbers 1 & 2. op page305.

Read Aloud- Hardheaded pgs 307-310. On lined paper write out the question and the answer for numbers 1& 2. This work is a class activity and must be turned in at the end of the period.

Project-Language/Reading

Students view and listen to the story in English about the Chinese heroine Mulan.

Activities: 1. write a summary

                 2. create a storyboard of 9 events

                 3. write a sentence describing the 9 events

This project extends itself to second period due to the length of the project and the integration of the use of language, reading and writing skills involved.

Students are asked to read aloud.

Follow-Up activity : Students answer the questions on sheet for the story on The Main Idea and Getting the Facts. sheets are turned in at the end of the period.

Class Activity: On lined paper find and copy the sentences from the story (Two Were Left pgs. 251-259)  that use the 8 vocabulary words. damage, defenseless, die, fear, injured, powerful, recover, weak Turn in at the end of the period.

Homework: Do the exercise on the handout  Unit 4 Prepare to Read. Answer the box Check Your Understanding and do a drawing for the box Deepen Your Understanding.

Class Activity- All students in the class create a class story. Students brainstorm ideas to create sentences that contribute to a story.

Read- Upon completion of the story, students read story aloud and edit as needed.

Homework- students add one more paragraph to the story.

Review definition of compound word. A compound word is two words that make a new word.  The new word has a new meaning.

example: butter +  fly   = butterfly

Classwork- Word Search on more vocabulary on the body. (Spanish students learned the cognates) This completes external and internal words for parts of the body.Classwork and Homework_ Students were given instructions to translate new words and find them in the word search for word recognition.

Edge textbook pg 70- Students learned about future careers. Vocabulary words used were job, career, profession. Students learned about the connection of schooling to the type of job that results from different levels of schooling. Students learned about the high school diploma, the college AA degree, the university BA and MA degrees and the Doctorate. Students read about part-time jobs and how they lead to possible careers.

Homework- Students given handouts on the identification of different jobs and careers.

Edge textbook- pg. 69-  classwork- The lesson today is about synonyms and antonyms.

Synonyms are words with similar meanings. Antonyms are words with opposite meanings.

classwork- students work on exercises with synonyms and antonyms. Students look up new words and translate words. Students must finish practice sheets for homework. Both periods were used for this exercise

Continue to learn vocabulary on parts of the body. Classwork- handouts on parts of the body.  On page 28 students are to list the external parts of the body.  The other column lists the internal organs. Students translated the words for internal parts of the body. Page 29 students fill in choosing words from the word bank below. Page 30 students drew the internal organs in the correct location of the body.  On part B match the words to the definition.  Read the dialogue on page 31.  Page 32. complete the dialogue. Page 33 answer the following questions in complete sentences.  Turn in at the end of the period.  This is homework as well as classwork.

 

Writing- Tell the story about the boy who played with matches. Give the story a title. Write 3 to 5 sentences for each picture on lined paper. There are 8 pictures. Staple the pictures to the lined paper.  Turn in the story at the end of the period.

Homework: Edge Textbook- Page 66- Answer the questions on the ANALYZE section.  ON LINED PAPER- Answer the 3 questions on page 66. For Number 3 Look at the sequence chart on page 62.  Draw a sequence chart on your paper and finish the last two boxes.  Sequence means the events in order of how they happened.
