Main activity this week: an in-class Response to Literature Essay comparing and contrasting the short story "Thank You, M'am" and the poem "Mother to Son." Several follow up activities to this essay.

Next week, Halloween activities -- songs and stories

We will begin reading the short story "The Necklace" in class today. Students will finish the story as homework. There will be a test over the story on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

With reference to the short story, "Thank You, M'am," students were assigned to write a "thank you letter" from Roger to Mrs. Jones. That assignment is due on Friday, Oct. 11.

Students were given homework today (Monday) that will be due on Wednesday, Sept. 25. This homework involves similes and puns.

On Thursday, Sept. 26, students will be taking a test over the Holt selection, a short story entitled "Thank You, M'am."

Students will be tested on Monday, Sept. 16, over the 28 literary terms given to them in class via a handout on Sept. 9. They will also be working with a partner -- mostly in class -- on a Literary Terms Poster. We will begin presenting these in class on Monday, Sept. 16.

Students were given a writing assignment yesterday, 8-29, that will be due on Friday, 9-6. There was ample instruction re: this writing assignment. Students are to focus on 8 words that end with the suffix " -ate ." There are to select any 5 of those 8 words and write a good paragraph on each one. They will write a total of five paragraphs that may be linked together in an essay format, or they may simply write five free standing paragraphs that are independent of each other.
