Final Project: Designing an experiment & operational definitions in Google Classroom

Final Project: Designing an experiment & operational definitions

Send this ONE of these forms per group and reference your group # on the sign up sheet.
Construct an experiment to test the psychological theory
How to design an experiment? For Example if you want to see if people are more obedient or less obedient nowadays in comparison to Milgram’s shock experiments… (NO YOU CANT SHOCK ANYONE) but you may create a scenario where either a friend or an adult ask the subject to say something negative about someone to see if they WOULD be obedient…. results could be similar to Milgram or… do we see something completely different?
1. What are your variables meaning: What will you measure in order to test out your topic question and idea?
Ex: If you were trying to see if peanut butter and jelly sandwiches have a connection to better GPA you may want to measure the GPA of your chosen demographics. Then the experiment may just be to survey subjects last test scores in a specific class and then asking if they love or hate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
    Dependent variable = GPA's
Independent variable = PBJ (Having it and not having it)
2. Next, create an hypothesis for your group - What do you believe the outcome of your data collection will
Hypothesis: What will the findings show in your measurements?

Ex. Hypothesis - PBJ will see an improvement in high GPAs
Hypothesis - Violent games do demonstrate more aggressive behavior in teens

Explain the steps of your data collection:
Consider theses ideas in your design.
What are your demographics and how will you randomly assign participants?
Will you be giving a survey or having subjects perform a task?
Will you need to deceive subjects to get an accurate collection of data?
How can we limit the amount of confounding variables?

4.
After completing both charts for each character complete discussion questions with your partner on similarities and differences of each character’s life within the Erikson’s Stages.

~ Did your figures get stuck in a certain stage? Which stages and do we see that throughout their life?
~ Examining both figures, imagine if the figures were both successful in the same stages. Would that have made the figures' lives much more similar or would it have made NO difference?

Assignment #1 Creating your own Intelligence test

1. In a group of 2-5 create your own intelligence test to measure intelligence.

Requirements:
2. You will need to select ONE of the 5 theories of intelligence and base the test on these theories to help you create your test. (Spearman, Thurstone, Cattel, Sternberg, or Gardner)
3. Create the test in either google forms, google slides, or google doc. (Form is my recommendation since its easier to give out the test and examine results)
4. You will need at least 10 questions for your intelligence test.
5. The intelligence test MUST demonstrate reliability and validity in measuring the theory you have selected.
Reliability - results will be consistent everytime you give it
Validity = actually measures what it is suppose to measure (Ex. your test examines how quickly someone responds to solving a problem = this is a measure of FLUID intelligence/ Validates Cattel's Theory)
6. Give the test to 2 people in a different group or 2 different groups but you need AT LEAST 2 people to take it. Consider getting reliable results. How can you do this?

Conclusion:
7. After creating and getting results from your test. Complete the questions as a group and decide if you test demonstrated a measurement of intelligence based on 1 of the 5 theories.
8. Answer questions thoughtful and address the different problems of intelligence test thus we can use for debate & discussions.

Concept: Representativeness Heuristic. The prototype of candy crush is like any basic puzzle game where you match colors. It is easy to assume that the game represents any other matching puzzle game ever played but the difficulty greatly changes after lv 30 and thus your heuristics of how to beat this game has to change. The first few levels is the representative heuristics of boring or lame games out there but after a certain point the prototype evolves into something truly unique.

2. Use the forms below and create your OWN COPY (Same copy for a group OR someone working individualy)

3. As you create your survey keep in mind these helpful tips to get honest, clear, and valid results

- Wording is important. Keep your wording neutral. No confusing or negatively charged words. See example.
- DO NOT TELL your subjects what you are measuring. If you tell someone that will given a survey on stress wouldn't that affect their stress level? Disguise your questions and redirect your subjects so they do not know what you are measuring. This is called a SINGLE BLIND.
- You may ask the same question in a different way. Why would this help with validty?

4. After constructing your google forms you must give the survey to 10+ students that you randomly selected. EACH person MUST give out a form to a DIFFERENT SAMPLE GROUP. If you working with a group you will use the SAME COPY of the SURVEY and give it to a DIFFERENT class, club, or home. Do not give the survey to any of the AP psych students.
