School Dismissal

May 20, 2020
Dear RHS Families,
There have been a number of things happening to recognize the senior class of 2020. Each Friday night at 8:20pm (20:20 military time) the lights of the stadium are on, there are banners posted in the front of the school, and seniors have lawn signs available to display in front of their homes. On May 19th we conducted our cap and gown distribution with students coming through our parking lot with decorated cars and being cheered on by staff (with proper social distancing in place). At the cap and gown distribution there was a letter provided to families that spoke to our efforts around recognition of the seniors for graduation on June 4th (letter posted below). Also, we will have our Senior Awards Night on June 1st at 7:00pm, which will be streamed on social media and then posted for all to see (links will be posted on the school website on the day of the event).

Dear RHS Families,
I hope that you and your families are doing well and healthy during this time. There are multiple items to inform you about in regards to grades, final exams, textbook collection, summer school, and senior activities:

Grading
The RUSD School Board passed a resolution on grading and this was communicated to all families indicating a Hold Harmless grading policy. This means that the grade that was earned prior to dismissal would be the lowest that it could possibly go to end the semester. Students have an opportunity to build up their grade during dismissal and I hope that they are taking advantage of this. Teachers are making sure that their gradebook has March 13th dismissal grades in place that will be the mark for this policy. Teachers will then move forward with the semester and the student will receive the higher grade on the semester grade report. Teachers are your first point of contact with questions or concerns with grades.

Final Exams
A final exam schedule has been created for distance learning to provide for structure, but students will need to be in communication with their teachers as to what the final exam will consist of as some have moved to alternative assessments. Seniors will have their finals early, as has been our practice, which will take place May 27th-May 29th. The rest of the school will have finals on June 1-June 3.

Textbook Collection
Starting this week we will be collecting items from students that are program-specific like athletic uniforms, photo equipment, etc. The program directors of these groups will notify those that will return during this week.

The following week will begin our process of textbook collections. This will be a drive through process in our parking lot with entry from the stadium entrance. Please have your textbooks together and you can hand them to our staff member, or we can retrieve them from your trunk. We will have a walk through process for those without vehicles that will take place near the Hideout.

Textbook Collection Schedule
May 20th: Seniors
May 22nd: Freshmen
May 27th: Sophomores
May 29th: Juniors

The above days will be split into two sessions:
  • 8am-11am is for students whose last name starts with A-M
  • 12pm-3pm is for students whose last name starts with N-Z

You will not be allowed to go to your lockers on textbook drop-off days.

Summer School
Summer School will take place through distance learning and will follow the same dates and times as posted. We will be distributing textbooks and Chromebooks through a parking lot pick up on June 5th with more details to follow.

Senior Activities
There have been a number of things happening to recognize the senior class of 2020. Each Friday night at 8:20pm (20:20 military time) the lights of the stadium are on, there are banners posted in the front of the school, and seniors have lawn signs available to display in front of their homes. On May 19th we will have cap and gown distribution happening in our parking lot with more information posted on the ASB pages of the website. The input of the class of 2020 was gathered through a district survey and will be used in the determination of how graduation will proceed. We do plan to have a Senior Awards Night on June 1st, which will be virtual and more information to follow on these events.

April 22, 2020

Dear RHS Families,

I hope that you are all safe and healthy at this time. RHS staff has been busy working on refunds for families for specific charges/purchases made through ASB accounts. We have sent forward a list of families to receive refunds (about 450) to the RUSD Fiscal Department for the processing of checks. The types of items to be refunded include Grade Nite tickets, graduation tickets, spring sport transportation contributions, and a portion of the spring sports fair share donation (as determined by the head coach). The processing of these checks will take 3 to 4 weeks in the current work setting due to dismissal, so anticipate mid-May to receive the refund check.

There have been various questions presented about yearbooks. There has been a delay in printing the yearbook as the printing company had initiated a temporary plant shutdown due to the Coronavirus. We normally receive the yearbook at the site towards the end of May, but we do not have confirmation on the delivery date to this point. We do know that we will receive the yearbooks and when we do, we will distribute them. We are working on a system of collection and distribution of materials (i.e. textbooks, chromebooks, athletic uniforms, band equipment, etc.) which we will use for the distribution of yearbooks. We are still selling yearbooks for those interested, and you can find that information at the Rowland Saga Yearbook page. We will keep you posted as more information comes our way.

We wanted to share a video about an online planner that your student can use to manage their remote learning. The program is called My Study Life and is an option for supporting the organization of class sessions, tasks, assessments, etc. This video was made by one of our staff members - click this link to learn how to use it screencast-o-matic.

Dear RHS Families,
To help with the organization of class meetings, we have created the following “Virtual Bell Schedule.” Teachers all have a copy of this schedule and are to use this in establishing their class meetings. Teachers are to respect the time of students and other teachers by scheduling within their assigned times. This will give 2-hours of dedicated “class” time to each period during the week and it will be at the teacher’s discretion on how that time will be used. Here is a copy of the schedule that we will be using:

There has been information provided districtwide with the Rowland Unified Student and Parent Guide for Remote Learning. Please click on the title/link and it will direct you to the district website to see the full document. As we move forward with distance learning there will be more information coming out on district grading policy during this period of dismissal as well as grade level information.

Dear RHS Families,
I hope this correspondence finds you and your family in good health and spirits. At this point your student should have consistent interaction with his/her teachers as to assignments being provided and work being turned in. Teachers are working on their transition to this online distance learning and are in various places with their instructional delivery. Teachers do understand that distance learning is new for everybody and therefore should be working with your student in their transition as well. We have been working on academic support for students with the following Homework Help and Tutoring Information:

There have been some financial questions coming in regards to refunds for various ASB sponsored events/purchases. We are currently compiling lists of students that are owed a refund for items such as graduation tickets, GradNite tickets, etc. which will be sent to the RUSD Fiscal Department to process and send refund checks directly to the home of those families.  We are currently working on systems for textbook, chromebook, and athletic uniform collections at the end of the school year and will provide more information on this at a later date. Please note that we will have Summer School, but we are not able to identify how it will be delivered at this point - within the classroom or through distance learning. We will communicate more on this as information becomes available, which includes summer athletic and performing arts programs.

March 26, 2020
Dear RHS Families,
Our staff has done an outstanding job to this point of transitioning to online learning and supporting families with that move as well. Teachers have their classrooms available and are moving out of an enrichment/review phase of instruction to provide new material from their curriculum through completely digital methods. Please reachout to the teachers and counselors if you are having any problems with accessing curriculum or connecting to staff. There are various resources posted throughout our website to support you and we will continue to post on social media.
3/19/20
Dear RHS Families,
Today we sent out the following message to all homes:

“Hello Rowland High School families, I hope this call finds you in good health and spirits. At this point teachers are fully operational with coursework posted, and many have been reaching out to their students through email and Google Classroom. It is important that students check their Rowland High School email and respond to their teachers as soon as possible. If students are having any problems they can communicate with teachers or counselors through email or call the school directly. Thank You.”

We will continue with Chromebook distribution on Friday 3/20 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. If a student is having problems with connecting to the internet or accessing their Rowland email please look into the resources provided on this page (to the right of this message).
Dear RHS Families,
We will continue with Chromebook distribution for the next two days out of the Hideout from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Students should bring their RHS ID card with them. Food distribution for the youth in our community is still happening from 11:00am to 1:00pm in the RHS parking lot. Please keep up with teacher webpages and Google Classrooms for assignments and directions. By now, all students should have made contact with all of their teachers and counselors are available by email if students need any support.

Dear RHS Families,
Teachers are working on their lesson plans and methods of moving their classes online during our school dismissal period. Please keep up with teacher webpages and Google Classrooms for assignments and directions as we move forward and know that teachers have begun to post the work already. Also, counselors are available through email, and registration and summer school sign-ups are continuing as planned. We are creating paper packets to mail home to the students that have communicated that they do not have access to a device and/or the internet for this first week. Distribution of Chromebooks for those that need them will begin on Wednesday, March 18th and those on the list to receive a device will have a call coming to the home with more details. By the end of today, students should have retrieved any materials they may have in their lockers to complete work from home. Note that we are not requiring that lockers be empty. Food distribution for the youth in our community is still happening from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the RHS parking lot.
3/16/20
Dear RHS Families,
During this time of school dismissal, we are working to ensure a continuity of instruction. For up-to-date information, please continue to check the RHS website, the RUSD website and your email.

Students may access the RHS campus between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on March 16 and 17 to get their books from their lockers.
Students in need of a Chromebook or internet access need to contact the school on March 16 or 17 at (626) 965-3448 to communicate the need.
