AP Chemistry and Chemistry Introduction

Hello Welcome to Chemistry and AP chemistry.
My name is Mrs. Hier and I am excited to be teaching chemistry and AP chemistry this year. I am truly passionate about science education and want you to have a great experience. Chemistry is a course that requires creativity, curiosity and logical thinking and for that reason plays an important part in your development. I also wish to inspire you to consider an interesting and rewarding STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) related career in your future.
Chemistry is a lab based physical science course where we study how chemistry is involved in all parts of our lives down to the smallest building blocks of matter, how interactions and forces inside and between molecules are formed, chemical energy, nuclear energy and chemistry technology.  We will think like scientists, practice the scientific method and use evidenced based argument and research. Students will conduct experiments, collect data, and analyze and explain the results.
AP Chemistry is a second year, in depth, fast paced College level Chemistry course that prepares students for the college board AP exam in May.  A minimum of sixteen college board AP recommended labs are completed with at least  six being Inquiry in style. In order to allow for completion of all labs and activities, AP chemistry is a 2 period class.
Due to a partnership with Occidental college an additional five college level labs are completed by both chemistry and AP chemistry students: Silver nitrate Stoichiometry, Esterification of Banana Oil, Caffeine extraction from Tea, Kinetics of H2O2 decomposition, Thermodynamics - Gas laws and absolute zero, using tech devices Vernier labquest and Mac Laptops.
I look forward to a great year with you!
You will need the following class materials: 1.5 to 2 inch  3 ring binder, scientific calculator,( Do not buy a TiXIIs or multi view calculator from Target- IMPORTANT! get a calculator with an (exp) or (ee) button), graph paper, line paper, pencil, eraser, pen, 5 dividers, metric ruler.
AP chemistry class materials are the same as above except a graphing calculator is needed. TI-83 or more recent model.
My schedule this 2018-2019 school year in D-9 is
Period 2  chemistry
Period 3  chemistry
Period 4  chemistry
Period 5  prep period
Period 6-7 AP chemistry
We will be using Google classroom as our blended learning platform.  Homework assignments can be found on google classroom and on your child's daily activity sheet in their chemistry notebook. Ask your child for the guardian code for our google classroom. Please email me at if you have any questions.  I can also be reached at extension 3282 but the phone is a bit trickier.
When you struggle- We all struggle at times.
Chemistry can be a challenging class. We will work together and help each other but I encourage students to use the Educreations tutorials I have made and posted on google classroom for extra help when needed. Please ask questions in class when you want clarification and come by during nutrition, lunch or after school to get help. Sometimes you just need a little extra time, practice and discussion to clear things up. There is also tutoring available after school in the library. Other recommendations for assistance - homework hotline 1877-827-5462, Kahn Academy, Bozeman science for online tutorials and Shmoop.
