Welcome to Rowland High School! The information below is meant to give you and your parents an understanding of the goals for this school year. Our Intensive reading course is Scholastic’s READ 180 program, a groundbreaking intervention program proven to improve reading achievement for students who are reading and writing below grade level.

 

READ 180 Course Description
The READ 180 course is an interactive class that combines technology, independent reading, and teacher-directed instruction using researched-proven practices. The content includes:
1. Organization and time management
2. Reading to understand textbooks in science and history
3. Using writing as a tool for thinking and learning
4. Using text structures for better note taking and note making
5. Study skills and test-taking strategies, and
6. Expository reading comprehension, word study, spelling, and reading fluency using the READ 180 software.

 

Expectations for all Students:
READ 180 Routines and Procedures
1. Arrive on time, put away your personal belongings, pick up class materials,
and go directly to your seat.
2. Focus and complete the warm-ups.
3. Pay attention during whole-group instruction, which sets the learning goal
for each day.
4. At the end of each rotation, gather your materials, wait for the signal, and
move quickly(counterclockwise) to the next learning zone .
5. Each learning station has expectations, know them and complete them, as
this is what you are graded on.
6. READ 180 materials NEVER LEAVE the CLASSROOM. Everything is
stored in our classroom.

 

Additional Expectations
1. Treat others with the respect, the same way you want to be treated.
2. Follow directions, and complete all assignments with pride.
3. Use appropriate language in our classroom.

 

Grades and Earning Points Toward Your Grade

 

Grades are based on:
1. Participation & effort
2. Completion of all required assignments
3. On task behavior / no interruptions
4. Attendance / tardies

 

100 – 90       A
89 - 80         B
79 - 70         C
69 - 60         D
59 & below   F

 

Materials needed for class everyday, and are stored in class:
1. Pencils
2. Highlighter
3. Paper, lots of it
4. 1” Notebook w/dividers
5. Correcting Pen, NOT BLUE or BLACK
6. Pencil Pouch
7. Eraser

 

You will lose points each day that you do not have the necessary supplies to work. The lack of materials causes disruptions.

 

Attendance
You are expected to come to class everyday. Too many absences will greatly affect your grade as well as your credits. Tardies are disruptions.

 

Responsibility
You are to care for all of the materials supplied for your use in the classroom as if they belonged to you. In this classroom, they do. However, if you damage or misuse any thing, you will be expected to pay for it or replace it.

HOMEWORK
Weekly reading log.  Students must read for 20 min. per night and write a brief summary, and then have a parent sign it.  The reading logs are due every Monday.
