English 11 Honors (Period 7)

Course Description

This course is the third class in Rowland High School's English honors series and builds on the skills taught in the two prior courses. It is also the first course in the two-year International Baccalaureate Language A progam. The curriculum is based on the four parts of the IB English curriculum (both HL and SL) and is also designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement exam in Literature and Composition (which they may choose to take at the end of their senior year). Critical reading and interpretive writing are the two primary skills emphasized in this course. Works of core literature include: Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea, Ethan Frome, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Miss Julie, Blood Wedding, The Metamorphosis, The House of the Spirits, and Teaching a Stone to Talk. Additional works of shorter length are also studied.
