Kincaid Pastiche in Google Classroom

Kincaid Pastiche

Directions:
A pastiche is an imitation of an artist’s style. In this case, you will be asked to write a pastiche of Jamaica Kincaid’s short story “Girl” in the form of an original short story. Jamaica Kincaid’s short story is an example of stream of consciousness where a mother rapidly advises her daughter about how to act and behave. Her main focus is to make sure that her daughter doesn’t become “the kind of woman” she doesn’t want her to be.
Your assignment is to compose a short story in the style of Jamaica Kincaid. Since most of you are probably 18, you have experienced different things in life. What advice would you give to a younger sibling or even to a future child? Write it to your specific gender and incorporate lessons and/or advice that you have learned and gained throughout the years.
Your short story should be one page in length.

The Art of Courtly Love: Unwritten Rules of Love

Directions:
Now that we have finished reading The Art of Courtly Love, I want you to consider some of the unwritten rules when it comes to love. What are unwritten rules? They are the ideas and the things we know without explicitly stating them. These ideas and how we view things are shaped from a variety of influences - parents/family, literature, movies/tv, etc.

Working in groups (up to four people), come up with a list of at least four rules for each of the following categories: Courtship/Dating, Gender: Expectations of Men, Gender: Expectations of Women, and Modern Relationships/Marriage.

Use Google Doc/Slide/Draw to create your unwritten rules.

Only one person needs to submit the assignment. The other group members just need to list who they worked with in a private comment. Please make sure that your assignment also has everyone's names on it.

Modern Day Modest Proposal in Google Classroom

Modern Day Modest Proposal

In “A Modest Proposal,” Jonathan Swift addresses a problem in society and provides a solution, although quite satirical, for it. Your assignment is to do something similar. Consider what problem exists or plagues society today. You will then create a Google Slide to address the problem and provide a solution. Keep in mind that the product that you create should be satirical. In other words, it should be filled with irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like. In addition, you want to create Google Slide that is creative, colorful, and attractive. The goal is to catch a person’s attention with the layout and format and then surprise him/her with your unique solution to a problem.

Make sure to clearly address the problem in society. Similar to Jonathan Swift, you want to include a variety of information to show that this is a serious problem. Include data (factual information, statistics), but also consider how Swift quoted others, although they remained anonymous, to support his proposal on using children as a food source. You can find real quotes and/or activists that support your cause and you can also mix in fictional elements as well (ex. Sallmanaazor from “A Modest Proposal”).

You may work in pairs or individually for this assignment. You will present your final product to the class.
