English 12 is a college-preparatory English class with an emphasis on the study of British and world literature. Coursework will focus on the three primary skills of the English curriculum: reading, writing, and speaking. This is a Common Core standards-based course that is intended to prepare students for the rigors of college-level reading, writing, and speaking, as well as encouraging mastery of the three Raider Goals. Core literature will include: The Epic of Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and Like Water for Chocolate. Additional titles may be added to the course, depending on time.

I have taught seniors for over 25 years and am aware of the challenges facing students at this time in their lives. I have high expectations, but I know that RHS seniors have the potential to meet and exceed them. If parents or students have questions and would like to contact me, please refer to the email address linked to this webpage.

Assignment

By Friday, 4/17, read "May," "June," "July," and "August" (87-159) and write the four homework paragraphs in a single document. Then, upload the document to Turnitin.com.

Remember that each paragraph should be at least six sentences, demonstrate an understanding of the novel in relation to the question, and that the topic sentence should function as a mini-thesis.

For your reference, the paragraph writing prompts are:

“May” 87-101
HW: Considering the author’s tone, do you think Laura Esquivel supports Pancho Villa and his rebel troops or is on the side of the federal soldiers? Include at least one direct quote from this chapter to support your position. Remember that a quote should be embedded within a sentence and punctuation almost always goes inside quotation marks.

“June” 107-118
HW: In “June,” Tita says that she knows what “sets off” her matches, but that they are currently “damp and moldy.” What is the spark that lights her matches and what is the reason they are damp and moldy? Be sure to compose a topic sentence that responds to both aspects of the question.

“July” 123-139
HW: Based on the revelations in this chapter, do you find Mama Elena to be a more sympathetic character? Explain your position.

“August” 145-159

Additional Requirements and Suggestions

You may use this sentence frame to help you structure your topic sentence: “__________ is the most important lesson I learned (or the one thing I am most looking forward to after graduation) because __________ and __________.”
  • Since this is a take-home writing assignment, I prefer that it be typed. However, you may write it legibly in ink or pencil.
