Scenario: Eddie is a ten year-old and his parents have just been told that he is mentally challenged based on the standard IQ (80) and achievement tests. Eddie has difficulty with his course work, but he has a lovable disposition and gets along well with his teacher and the other children in his class. He enjoys camping and the outdoors and is excellent at basketball and often will go outside to shoot free-throws rather that doing his homework. Eddie also enjoys listening to music and is interested in learning the guitar.

  3.       What is the role of the parasympathetic system in an emotional response? Parasympathetic takes effect after a stressful or emotional response by counteracting the effects by slowing heart rate and relieving tense muscles.
  4.       Describe the James-Lange theory of emotion. The James-Lange theory is when a stimulus produces a physiological response that leads to an emotion.
  5.       Describe the Cannon-Brad theory of emotion. Emotions are caused by a stimulus that sends signals to the hypothalamus which trigger both an internal physiological response as well as an emotional response at the same time.
  6.       Describe the Two Factor theory of emotion. The two factor theory suggests emotions result from assessing of physiological response (factor 1) and a arousing stimulus (factor 2)
  7.       Describe the cognitive theory of emotion. The Cognitive theory suggests our emotions are result of how we assess the event.

External locus of control suggest how individual believe the events of their lives our outside of their personal control versus an internal locus of control that suggest events can be influenced by personal actions.
  13.       Describe the overjustification phenomenon. Giving extrinsic rewards to intrinsically motivated behavior is the overjustification effect. Extrinsic ideas may then displace the intrinsic motivation.

Directions

  • Using the internet find an example of a painting that you feel expresses one of the more complicated emotion depicted in the chart on pg 301. (Select any emotion NOT part of the basic 7 from Etman)
 
  • After finding an appropriate painting, type a half-page double-space paper identifying the emotion you believe your painting is expressing. Also describe how you believe your painting expresses the emotion identified.  Next copy and paste an image of your painting at the bottom of your paper.
 
  • Email me a copy of the JUST the painting at [email protected] by Wednesday 1/29.  I will put your painting into a PowerPoint presentation and you will present your painting to the class on Wednesday.
