Feature Article writing tips:
- Write an impressive introduction, reinforcing the headline message. It can contain a thought-provoking question or an idea. Give readers more to whet their appetites, but keep it tight — no more than 50-75 words. Use an exclamation point or quotation marks wherever needed.
- If you can, take surveys, request that people fill in questionnaires or take interviews. Sift through this data and identify what will contribute substantially to a major theme for the story and retain whatever is necessary.
- Humanize the feature. This shows editors that your expert will be interesting to interview. Start with the quote first, then add the attribution (e.g., "Johnny Appleseed, a pie expert and president of the All American Pie Company.") If you want to add another quote, you can then use "says Appleseed."

Email me your lead tonight from your in-class interview.
Also, find two different leads from a reliable news source. Be sure to cite where you got your information.
Here are the types of leads that you may use:
who--begins with a person
when--begins with time (rarely used)
where--begins with place (rarely used)
Used most often:
how--begins with the "how" of the story
why--begins with the cause of the story
what--begins with the fact of the story
