Optional: "The Tyger" Body Paragraph in Google Classroom

Optional: "The Tyger" Body Paragraph

Revisit "The Tyger" by William Blake. Select a literary device to closely analyze and discuss in a body paragraph. Consider the following in your body paragraph:
1. How does the literary device function within the context of the lines? within the context of the poem as a whole?
2. Does the literary device reveal the tone of the poem? How so?
3. Does the literary device establish mood/atmosphere? How so?
4. What can you interpret from the textual evidence selected that includes the use of that particular literary device?

This assignment is optional. However, I will provide feedback if you decide to complete the body paragraph. Hopefully this will help to ease the struggle that some of you are experiencing in not only identifying the use of literary devices within a text, but how to closely analyze and interpret the use of them with selected textual evidence.

Writing Assignment: Creating a Story in Google Classroom

Writing Assignment: Creating a Story

In “The Story of an Hour,” Kate Chopin demonstrates how she is able to write a short story of compressed intensity. Mrs. Mallard is initially told that her husband is killed in a railroad disaster. Within a quick span of time, she goes through many emotions and briefly experiences a sense of freedom before her husband walks through the door.

Your assignment is to write a one-paged short story (typed, single-spaced) in a similar style as Kate Chopin’s story. It should have compressed intensity in it. The subject/focus is your choice, but please make sure that it is appropriate content.

Kincaid Pastiche in Google Classroom

Kincaid Pastiche

A pastiche is an imitation of an artist’s style. In this case, you will be asked to write a pastiche of Jamaica Kincaid’s short story “Girl” in the form of an original short story. Jamaica Kincaid’s short story is an example of stream of consciousness where a mother rapidly advises her daughter about how to act and behave. Her main focus is to make sure that her daughter doesn’t become “the kind of woman” she doesn’t want her to be.
Your assignment is to compose a short story in the style of Jamaica Kincaid. Since you are on the brink of adulthood, you have experienced different things in life. What advice would you give to a younger sibling or even to a future child? Title it in whatever manner you choose (“Girl,” “Boy,” or however you see fit) and incorporate lessons and/or advice that you have learned and gained throughout the years.
Your short story should be one page in length.

Summer Reading Assignment 2020 in Google Classroom

Summer Reading Assignment 2020

In order to prepare for the first novel for the class, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, please read the following sections in How To Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster:
“Introduction: How’d He Do That?”
“It’s More Than Just Rain or Snow”
“If She Comes up, It’s Baptism”
“Geography Matters…”
“…So Does Season”

These sections will be relevant to the novel and throughout the year, we will refer back to this nonfiction work to make connections with the works studied in class. As you read the above chapters, I strongly suggest taking notes (any format of your liking) in a notebook (which will be a place for you to keep all notes, AP prep activities, Voice Lessons, etc.). This will be the first assignment going into your notebook and by the end of the school year, when you need to start reviewing for the AP Exam, your notebook will come in handy.

I included a PDF of How to Read Literature in Google Classroom. When you check out textbooks for the school year, you will be able to get a hard copy of the book. In addition, hopefully The Awakening will be available in the bookroom for you to check out. If not, I will have a PDF available for you, but you may want to purchase your own copies of novels. What I tend to do is mark my novels, noting key passages, scenes, character descriptions, literary devices and figurative language, etc. I always find it easier to sticky note my book and easily reference to passages during class discussion. In addition, you never know what you will be reading in college and it might come in handy having your own copy later!

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me throughout the summer via Classroom and email.
