IB Math Studies (Period 4)

Course Description

Course Overview

IB Math Studies is a course prescribed for students who wish to maximize their understanding and abilities of mathematics content and/or prepare for the Math Studies SL Exam as part of the IB Diploma Program. Additionally, students who will pursue enrollment in a four-year college are especially encouraged to enroll.

The content of College Algebra – IB Math Studies covers a broad range of math skills from pre-algebra through introductory calculus. IB Math Studies students can expect to have homework assigned each evening that will normally require at least 30 minutes to complete. However, sometimes students will be able to finish their assignment during class time. Parents are encouraged to make sure that students are completing assignments and that the work demonstrates a conscientious effort on the assigned problems. Daily assignments may be viewed on the RHS website. (Go to http://www.rowlandhs.org , select "About RHS" at the top of the page, select “Staffulty” from the drop-down box that appears, and then scroll down to my name.) Current Grades are available through "Homelink".

Grading

Grades will be determined by dividing a student’s total points earned by the total points possible during each grading cycle. Grades will be assigned according to the following scale:

90%      -     100%    =    A

80%      -       89%     =    B

70%      -       79%     =    C

60%      -       69%     =    D

59%      or below     =    F

Tests will constitute approximately 70% - 75% of the course grade. Homework and projects will make up the remainder of the grade. Homework will not be graded for accuracy. I consider homework as practice. Accordingly, homework points will be assigned as a subjective analysis of the effort that was expended by the student. That is, if it appears that a conscientious effort was applied toward completing the assignment, then the full number of points possible will be assigned. If it appears that minimal effort was expended on an assignment, then points will be deducted accordingly. In general, I will look to see if the entire assignment was attempted, as well as the quality of the work demonstrated on the paper.
