I was out doing my grocery shopping this morning, and I saw a parked car with a window that read, “My rights don’t end where your fear begins.” The car also had the words “Re-open California” written on the rear window. I’m not sure if this is pertinent information, but the driver of the vehicle was not wearing a mask. (Masks are generally worn in public to prevent the spread of disease, not necessarily for one’s protection.)
Ever the AP Lang teacher, I was struck by the rhetoric of the owner of that vehicle, and what sort of message (both verbal and nonverbal) they are trying to send their audience—and who their audience might be to begin with.
My question is twofold, and you can answer one or both below: How effective is the rhetoric of the owner of the vehicle? What are your thoughts on the recent, similar protests against the quarantine across California and the country?
