Jamaica Kincaid Pastiche:
A pastiche is an imitation of an artist’s style. In this case, you will be asked to write a pastiche of Jamaica Kincaid’s short story “Girl” in the form of an original short story. Jamaica Kincaid’s short story is an example of stream of consciousness where a mother rapidly advises her daughter about how to act and behave. Her main focus is to make sure that her daughter doesn’t become “the kind of woman” she doesn’t want her to be.
Your assignment is to compose a short story in the style of Jamaica Kincaid. Since most of you are probably 18, you have experienced different things in life. What advice would you give to a younger sibling or even to a future child? Write it to your specific gender and incorporate lessons and/or advice that you have learned and gained throughout the years.
Your short story should be one page in length handwritten.
