Which does Judge Hand believe is a more powerful force in society, the law or the hearts and minds of citizens? To what extent does the Tom Robinson trial and its verdict in the novel reflect Judge Hand's beliefs? (3-4 sentences)

In 1944, federal judge Learned Hand gave a speech on the spirit of liberty, in which he reflected:

I often wonder whether we do not rest our hopes too much upon constitutions, upon laws, and upon courts. These are false hopes; believe me, these are false hopes. Liberty dies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can save it.

TKAM SG Chapters 10-14 in Google Classroom

TKAM SG Chapters 10-14

Atticus instructs Scout and Jem that “it's a sin to kill a Mockingbird.” What does this advice mean? Look for evidence in the text to help you explain. What literary devices does Harper Lee use to communicate how Scout and Jem describe Atticus in how he proceeds to “take care’ of Tim Johnson. What is courage? Compare Atticus's decision to represent Tom Robinson with Mrs. Dubose's decision to kick her morphine habit before her death. In what ways are their convictions similar and different? How are they both courageous?Scout notices that Jem, who has turned 12 at the beginning of Ch. 12, has changed. Describe how Jem is different. How has the relationship between the siblings changed? How does the woman named Lula react when she sees Scout and Jem arrive at the First Purchase Church with Calpurnia? Why do you think she reacts as she does? How do the other congregants of the First Purchase react to Scout and Jem’s presence? After going to Calpurnia’s church, Scout states, “That Calpurnia led a modest double life never dawned on me.” In what sense does Calpurnia lead a double life? Scout tells us, “Aunt Alexandra fitted into the world of Maycomb like a hand into a glove, but never into the world of Jem and me.” Based on what you have learned so far, how is the world of Scout and jem different from the “world of Maycomb”? What factors make these worlds different?
